DofE project wins Ethical Award

BOB team

Students and DofE participants at Savio Salesian College in Bootle, Merseyside came up with a unique design that aims to solve the problem associated with bat or bird habitats.  For the past two years they have been making and selling nest boxes for bats or birds, as part of their mini-enterprise project.

The design, a Bat or Bird box (or the ‘BOB’ box), is believed to be the first of its kind that combines a dual purpose of a potential roost for bats that could be easily converted to a home for birds in two simple steps.  The class of Year 8 pupils have been working alongside an older group of DofE participants to create the BOB boxes during their lunch break.  The Year 10 students have been taking part in the BOB box construction as part of the Volunteering section of their DofE programmes.

The BOB box has been given a stamp of approval by the local bat community and national bat charity, the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT), who are also supporting the project through funds and giving advice on bats and their special requirements.

As well as regional success and praise for the project, the group have now received national recognition.  Last Thursday representatives from the group travelled to London to the Victoria and Albert Museum to receive their prize for being selected as the winner of the Ecover Ethical Kids Award as part of the Observer Ethical Awards 2011.

The awards are now in their 6th year and widely known as the ‘green Oscars’.  There are nine separate categories and this year’s judges included Colin Firth, Ben Fogle, Deborah Meaden and Brian Cox, to name but a few.

Gifts of the BOB were also made to the Queen and Prince Charles, both of whom replied with glowing endorsements.  Future plans for the team (and the generous bursary given by their sponsor Ecover) include a bat and bird conservation project for the wider region and working with nearby Altcourse Prison to increase production.
