BOLD Adventures - OPEN Gold Qualifying Expedition - Northumberland in Solitude

This awesome expedition will cross the beautiful Northumberland area using scenic routes with the main focus on solitude and wilderness, beginning at Hadrian’s Wall and taking participants overland to the Scottish border at Carter Bar. You will cross varied terrain featuring areas of moorland and forest with detailed ground features and interesting Roman remains. The route has been highly enjoyed by many previous groups; with self-sufficiency a main theme, this is a really ‘out there’ adventure of discovery and exploration! As you come down off the moorland towards the finish, you will be greeted by the sound of bagpipes drifting over the hills… a truly memorable experience we hope! Transport to and from Sheffield, wild camping and Assessment provided. Whatever you’ve experienced up and until now, BOLD Adventures truly have your best interests and success at heart.

Possible volunteering opportunities with Metro Blind Sport, North London

Metro Blind Sport organises Sound Ball tennis sessions for blind players every other Wednesday 6-8pm at Islington Tennis Centre, North London. We need a sighted guide for each blind player and it's a good opportunity for volunteers doing their DofE.

Sound Ball tennis is played in the service boxes of a tennis court using foam balls with bells in, slightly smaller rackets and tactile lines that the players can feel with their feet. Blind players need a sighted volunteer to guide them around the court, to call the lines and to pick up the balls. You don't need to be able to play tennis and we will teach you how to guide. It's an excellent experience for people to learn some useful life skills about communicating with people from different backgrounds and something different to have on a CV.

More details of blind tennis can be found here: http://www.metroblindsport.org/sports/tennis/

Here are details of a film the BBC made with some of the blind players and sighted volunteers. It explains well what it means to the players to play sport which wouldn't happen without volunteer help.

    http://bbc.in/2d0hFaT

Please make sure you speak to your DofE leader before starting this volunteering opportunity so they can check that it fits the volunteering requirements.

Possible volunteering opportunity for over 18s in London - mentoring with Solidarity Sports

Solidarity Sports’ Befriending Programme focuses on providing children with ways to explore their interests and engage in new activities. Befriending enables children to increase their social, emotional and relational skills. During regular outings, they spend one on one time with adults who are consistent and reliable role models.

    Who are Solidarity Sports?
Solidarity Sports is a small charity that creates a safe and loving environment where happy memories can flourish. We work with vulnerable children who live in central London.
    More information at: http://www.solidaritysports.org

    What is befriending?
A mentor is matched to a child.
Every week, for a period of at least 6 months, the mentor takes the child “out and about” in London for 2 to 3 hours.
Outings vary a great deal according to the child’s interests: these include sports, museums, parks, art & craft, London landmarks etc.

Please make sure you speak to your DofE leader before starting this activity so they can check its fits the requiremnts of the volunteering section.
