November 2016 - issue 36

This issue brings news of the first ever Facebook Live broadcast from St James’s Palace, tips on how to showcase your DofE skills when applying for university and jobs plus, just two weeks left to enter our We Are DofE photo competition.

Eight weeks to go!
There are now only eight weeks to finish your DofE Diamond Challenge! If you have still to choose your challenge (or still want to sign up), here are some inspirational wintry challenges already completed:

Fionula started off her year by taking on a daring black ski run, Sue has taken on a challenge to ice-skate a total of 60 hours this year and Jennifer (pictured) travelled to South Greenland and trekked across a section of the ice cap and kayaked amongst icebergs.

And for those looking for indoor inspiration: staff at Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen are organising a Christmas staff pantomime, with all funds raised through ticket sales being generously donated to the DofE Charity.

With just two months left to finish your challenge, embrace what the DofE is all about and open yourself up to opportunities you may not have had the chance to explore! Try your hand at knitting a scarf or Christmas jumper; organise a Christmas bake-off at work; or rally some of your more daring friends and take on an ice swimming challenge.

Whatever your challenge, ensure you let us know all about it by submitting your photo here or sharing it with us on social media using #DofEChallenge.

The LifeZone – helping you  to showcase your DofE skills
Did you know that, according to a study conducted by British Gas, nine in ten employers believe job seekers should focus on their soft skills just as much as academic results?

In a competitive job market, it can be hard to stand out from the crowd. Luckily, doing your DofE will equip you with just the soft skills that leading employers are looking for.

But do you know what soft skills are, why they are so important and how to show off the skills you’ve gained through your DofE when applying for jobs?

We’ve updated the LifeZone with new and exclusive pages to help you make the most of the soft skills you’ve developed whilst doing your DofE. Visit the LifeZone (accessed via your eDofE account) to find out more!

Two weeks left to enter to win a new Canon camera!
There are just two weeks left to enter our We Are DofE photo competition, where the shots best representing the theme ‘We Are DofE’ are in with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes.

First place will win a Canon EOS 1300D – second and third win a Canon Powershot SX620HS. On top of this, all shortlisted photos will be exhibited at Heathrow Airport's T5.

It's free to participate and there's no limit to how many photos you can enter. All entries must be submitted on the DofE Facebook page by 14 November 2016.

Radio 1 Newsbeat live from the Palace
We were delighted to welcome BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat team to our Gold Award Presentation at St James's Palace on 13 October where they made the first ever Facebook Live broadcast from the Palace.

Presenters Chris Smith, Sinead Garvan, Hannah Moore and Nick Rotherham are all DofE Award holders and broadcasted live from the presentation on Facebook. Check out the video here.

Syke from Scotland was collecting her Gold Award from the Palace that day. Read all about her experience of the presentation here.
