There's an expedition flavour to this month's DofE News... Tens of thousands of DofE participants will be taking to the countryside in the next few months and we hope that their experiences will last a lifetime and help develop their skills for life and work.

Please remember to promote the Interactive Kit List - it really is an excellent tool!

Countryside care

With the expedition season starting, please remember the importance of participants (and adults) respecting the environment. Please ensure participants understand land access laws, and adhere to the Countryside Code.

Be careful where cars and minibuses are parked, and remember that you will be representing your organisation and the DofE at all times on your expedition.

There were a number of reports last years of participants damaging dry stone walls by climbing over them. Please check that groups know they must use stiles, gates or gaps in field boundaries. Lastly, make sure you leave no trace!

Cumbria Assessor Network

The Cumbria Assessor Network is one of the busiest networks for the DofE with over 2,000 Gold assessments in 2016.

Cumbria is considered one of the most beautiful regions in the UK and we have a fantastic team of Network Assessors available to support Gold expeditions.

The Assessors have many years' experience assessing in the Lake District and offer a truly independent assessment required for the Gold Award. See

Stove safety

Before participants go on their expedition, they must know how to use their stoves safely; a guidance sheet can be found on our website.

Make sure teams can re-fuel them and drain water safely, and know which parts get hot when cooking.
